Three ways to count

How many pages is a given amount?

The number of pages depends on the font, font size and line spacing, so there is no single exact figure. As a general rule of thumb, one manuscript page (Times New Roman 12, line spacing 1.5) contains about 1,800–2,000 characters including spaces or about 250–300 words. The table below gives a rough guide — the calculator computes a more precise estimate with your chosen settings.

Character count in different languages

The same content takes a different number of characters in different languages. English text is often slightly more compact than Finnish, because Finnish has long compound words and case endings. In the calculator you can choose the language, so the estimate of words and pages takes the average word length into account. This gives a more realistic estimate of the length of a translated text, for example.

Example: sizing an essay

Suppose the task is to write a 1,500-word essay. How long will it be? With line spacing 1.5 and font size 12, it is about five pages. If the guideline is a character count, for example 6,000 characters including spaces, that corresponds to roughly 900–1,000 words, i.e. about three pages. Characters, bytes and file size

The character count and the file size are not the same thing. One ASCII character takes one byte when stored, but Scandinavian letters and many special characters take two bytes in UTF-8 encoding. So Finnish text can be slightly longer in bytes than the character count would suggest. When estimating text length, it is worth distinguishing these: the character count tells you the extent of the readable text, while the bytes relate to storage space and data transfer.

Text length matters in many contexts. Social media platforms have strict character limits, search engine result titles and descriptions get cut off after a certain length, and in many publications the length of articles is defined in characters. Translators and editors are often billed on the basis of the character count, so accurate measurement is part of the profession.
