Brutto ↔ netto · arvioHow to estimate the salary
- Enter the gross salary. The monthly gross salary in euros.
- Enter the tax rate. You will find it on your tax card. The calculator does not assume any fixed tax.
- Add other deductions. For example the trade-union fee, if you want to include it.
- Calculate. You get an estimate of the net salary and the share of deductions.
Gross, net and deductions
The gross salary is the salary before deductions. The net salary is what remains in hand after taxes and other deductions. In Finland, withholding tax is deducted from the salary according to the tax card, along with statutory employee contributions. Because taxation is personal and depends on income, deductions and the tax card, this calculator uses the tax rate you provide and does not make assumptions for you.
From hourly wage to monthly estimate
If you work on an hourly wage, you can estimate monthly earnings by multiplying the hourly wage by the weekly hours and then by the number of weeks in a month. The calculator uses an average of 4.33 weeks per month. The result is a gross estimate, from which taxes are deducted the same way as from a monthly salary. This helps you get a sense of your income level, for example in part-time work or with variable hours.
Example: €3,000 gross salary
Assume a monthly gross salary of €3,000 and a tax card withholding rate of 22 %. The tax is then 3000 × 0.22 = €660. If, in addition, the statutory employee pension and unemployment insurance contributions total about 8.6 %, their share is about €258. In this example, roughly 3000 − 660 − 258 = €2,082 would be left in hand. The figures are indicative: always use your own tax card rate, as it is personal.

The tax rate and how to check it
The withholding rate is based on your estimated annual income. If your income changes during the year — for example due to a job change, extra work or an unpaid period — the rate may be too low or too high. Too low a rate leads to back taxes and too high a rate to a tax refund. You can check and, if necessary, change the rate in the tax authority's service. This calculator uses the rate you give as is, so an up-to-date rate gives the most accurate estimate.

For the employee, the net salary is what matters, but for the employer the salary costs clearly more than the gross. On top of the gross salary come the employer's side costs, such as pension insurance, health insurance and other statutory contributions. Because of these, the employee's "total cost" can be some twenty percent higher than the gross salary. This explains why a pay rise feels like a bigger cost to the employer than what ultimately reaches the employee's account.
The chain thus runs in three steps: the employer's total cost, from that the employee's gross salary, and finally the net salary left after taxes and employee contributions. This calculator focuses on the gross-to-net relationship from the employee's perspective using your own tax rate. Grasping the whole picture nonetheless helps you understand salary negotiations and why the differences between the various figures are so large.
