O conversor mostra Mbps, Gbps, MB/s e GB/s lado a lado.

  1. Insira o tamanho do arquivo. Por exemplo 1,5 GB. Escolha a unidade (MB, GB, TB).
  2. Insira a velocidade da conexão. Por exemplo 100 Mbps. Escolha Mbps ou Gbps.
  3. Calcular.

Bits and bytes — Mbps or MB/s?

The most common confusion in internet speed is the difference between bits and bytes. Connection speed is given in bits per second (Mbps = megabits per second), but file sizes in bytes (MB = megabytes). One byte is eight bits, so 100 Mbps corresponds in theory to about 12.5 MB/s. This explains why a "hundred-meg connection" does not download a hundred-megabyte file in a second but in about eight seconds.

Speed (Mbps)= MB/sDownload de 1 GB (ideal)
10 Mbps1,25 MB/sapprox. 13 min
100 Mbps12,5 MB/sapprox. 1.3 min
300 Mbps37,5 MB/sapprox. 27 s
1000 Mbps125 MB/sapprox. 8 s

Exemplo: downloading a 4K movie

Let's download a 15-gigabyte 4K movie on a 100 Mbps connection. First convert the speed to bytes: 100 Mbps / 8 = 12.5 MB/s. The file is 15 GB, i.e. 15,000 MB. The ideal download time is 15000 / 12.5 = 1,200 seconds, i.e. 20 minutes. In practice the speed rarely reaches the maximum, so a realistic estimate (about 80 %) is closer to 25 minutes. The calculator shows both times so you can allow enough time.

Factors affecting download speed

The actual speed depends on many things. A wireless connection is sensitive to distance and interference, so a wired network cable often gives a steadier resultado. The server you download from may limit the speed, and at peak times the network is more loaded. The performance of your device and router also plays a part. If the measured speed differs greatly from what the connection promises, it is worth testing the connection with a cable and against a nearby server to find the bottleneck.

Bandwidth, latency and jitter

Connection quality is more than download speed. Bandwidth tells how much data can transfer per unit of time — that is what the internet speed figure usually measures. Latency, on the other hand, tells how quickly a single data packet travels there and back. High bandwidth does not help in games or video calls if latency is high, because then the action feels jerky and slow to respond.

Jitter means variation in latency: when packets arrive at uneven intervals, audio and video can stutter even if the average speed is good. For downloading files, bandwidth is decisive, but for real-time use low and steady latency is more important. This calculator estimates the download time based on bandwidth; a complete picture of the connection emerges when you also consider latency and its variation.

Em resumo

The internet speed calculator estimates a file's download time and converts Mbps, Gbps, MB/s and GB/s units. Enter the file size and connection speed, and you see both the ideal and the realistic download time. The tool illustrates the difference between bits and bytes, which explains why a download takes longer than expected.

Perguntas frequentes

Why is 100 Mbps not 100 MB/s?
Can I convert Gbps to megabytes?
Sim.
